Morgan Puts Pedal To Metal

Barry Park

Specialist marque Morgan is celebrating its centenary this year with a special model - a single-seater pedal car.

The $5100 toy is a faithful two-thirds scale replica of a 1909 Morgan Runabout, the first car designed by company founder Henry Morgan.

The lucky six to 13-year-old child driver is connected via the pedals to a three-speed crank. Beneath its aluminium skin, Morgan says, the Supersport Junior Pedal Car is much like a recumbent bicycle.

The company is waiting to ensure there is sufficient interest from the public before putting together a limited run of 500 of the pedal cars mid-year. For those with more adult tastes, the top-of-the-range Morgan is the $250,000-plus Aero 8.

The more grown-up transport features a BMW-sourced 4.8-litre V8 engine punching out an impressive 270kW of power and 500Nm and will complete the 0-100kmh sprint in about 4.5 seconds.
